Dorothy Kirk to Stand Down as Cornwall Councillor for Calstock
After more than a decade of dedicated service, Dorothy Kirk has announced that she will not be seeking re-election as Cornwall Councillor for Calstock in May. First elected in 2013, Dorothy has been a tireless advocate for her community, securing vital investment and fighting for local services.
Reflecting on her time in office, Dorothy Kirk said:
“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve the residents of Calstock & Gunnislake since I was first elected in 2013. Over the years, I have worked hard to deliver real improvements for our community, including securing over £200,000 in funding for road safety improvements in St Ann’s Chapel, protecting the Tamar Valley railway line, securing funding for the Calstock Walkway and Wetland Project, retrieving £42,000 for the Gunnislake Woodland Centre, and successfully campaigning for more bus shelters—just a few of the projects I have been proud to deliver.
But the work I’m most proud of is helping individuals. It’s not something that can be publicised, but it is what has driven me every day—it is the difference a Labour councillor can make for everyday people.
I would like to thank residents for the support they have shown me time and again, and I hope they will understand how difficult a decision it has been to step away from Cornwall Council. I will continue working for the parish council if I am fortunate enough to be re-elected to that body.
Now it’s time to pass the reins over to the next generation, and I would like to ask the people of Calstock, Gunnislake, Harrowbarrow, Chilsworthy, Latchley, and St Ann’s Chapel to support the wonderful Lara Kramer on May 1st, as you have supported me. Lara has my full endorsement and support, and I will work with her to ensure the continued success and championing of the Calstock Division.”
Labour Group Leader Cllr Kate Ewert paid tribute to Dorothy’s service, saying:
“I want to thank Dorothy for her years of service to her local community of Calstock, to Cornwall as a whole, and to the Labour Party. The Labour Group wishes her well in her retirement, and she goes with our gratitude.”
Anna Gelderd MP, Labour MP for South East Cornwall, also praised Dorothy’s record:
“Dorothy has been a steadfast champion for Calstock and the Tamar Valley, deeply rooted in her community and always fighting for local people. From securing vital local improvements to tirelessly helping residents with everyday challenges, her dedication has made a real difference. I thank her for her years of service in South East Cornwall and wish her all the best for the future.”
With Dorothy’s endorsement, Labour is urging residents to support Lara Kramer on May 1st, ensuring that Calstock continues to have a strong voice on Cornwall Council.
